Resident Evil 3 : Review
Sep. 24th, 2007 10:16 amSaturday night, I went to see Resident Evil 3.
You know, I love genre movies. I'm not big on slasher films, but I love sci-fi, and I love zombie movies, and I love bug hunts. :) What I *really* love is when a movie is one of those things and is also thoughtful or surprising or especially clever. Resident Evil 3 is none of those things, but ... I still love the genre, and I still like the series, and it did deliver on the zombies and the story continuation. I like Mila Jovovich. I *love* Oded Feyr. I like Ali Larter too... and they all delivered nicely. So - I liked it. I give it a 6 out of 10.
I shall try not to be too egregious with the spoilers... :)
The big problem with the movie is that - while it looks as though the writers tried for continuity (good), they didn't seem to try all that hard for an original story within it (boo). Because of this, much of the actual fighting and movement seems largely pointless, except as a backdrop for progressing the continuity aspect. The story takes place five years after Apocalypse, with very little explanation of what happened in between. There is some inference, and of course there is a lot of explanation in the setting alone, but it could have been better. I *know* it could have been better, because the last two times it was.
The Alice / Olivera chemistry is great, and at least we get to see quite a bit of it. Not enough, naturally. :) I also think they spent too much time on too many subordinate characters. Having a smaller number with more focussed airtime would have helped.
And, anyone who knows me will know what the most unforgivable problem with the movie is, but it is a big spoiler. SO - lets just leave it with. Unforgiveable!
That being said, it's still worth seeing if you're a genre fan or a fan of the actors. Go in looking for an entertaining hour and a half, and that is what you'll get. Go in looking for a message or a great movie and you'll come out disappointed.
