Fic: [SGA] Whipping Boy [PG13 - violence]
Dec. 16th, 2009 07:43 pmTitle: Whipping Boy
Author:
skinscript
Eps/spoilers: Minor spoiler for Daedalus Variations.
Rating: PG13 - violence
Type: Gen
Words: ~45K
Warning(s): Violence, horror, and character deaths.
Thanks go to:
cali063 and
goblie!!
Summary: McKay, Lorne, and three teams of Marines head out on a research mission to a planet on the edge of the galaxy, and disappear without a trace. Eight months later Lorne returns with two injured team members, a counterfeit McKay, and no explanations. What the hell happened eight months ago, and where's McKay?
A/N: This is NOT woobie!slavefic. Nor is it woobie!whump or other woobie. It is an action, war, battle, overcoming odds, Sci Fi story. The title, while relevant (I promise!) is NOT a nod to any form of emo angst through emotional abuse. (Apparently it's a trope! Who knew? Author's note courtesy of comments from brave readers!)
So -- assuming the warnings and A/N haven't scared you off...

You all have no idea how tempted I am to just write "by skin script" sixty times to see the word count go over. Note that I would split my name in two to get to count more words. *sigh*
I was kidding about that last part. I wouldn't split my name.
So - why stop when I'm soooooo close? Because I am tired as hell and while I've made the word count, I'm not quite done. The great battle is all I have left and I feel more like a wet noodle. So, instead, it shall be completed tomorrow.
Thank you everyone for all your support, especially my tireless betas and you folks on my flist who don't seem to mind getting daily spam. Tomorrow we celebrate!
A good day and some good scenes done. I'm actually thinking I have about 8K words left, much to my chagrin, though I can complete my first draft without them all. Some dark themes in this one, geeze -- Poor Lorne! I feel kind of bad for the nightmares he's now going to have for the rest of his life!
Once I've got the rest of the bones built I'll need to print out and re-evaluate ordering to see how pace works.
Another rough day. I'm right about at that part of the story where I start saying "this whole thing is crap. What was I thinking!?" but since I sure don't have time to start something new, I guess this is what I'll be going ahead with. I'm kind of unhappy with the writing; lots of very repetitive phrasing which I hate, but overall I'm pretty pleased with 30K words in 10 days, especially since I've been full time Mom this whole time and have only been able to write starting at about 10:30-11pm. On the other hand, I've hit a potential plot illogic that, while I can handwave around it or simply not mention it, is the kind of thing that can derail me completely. :(
Anyway, almost there!
Holy crap hard slogging today, but I also have a very rough outline of how the rest goes. I'm skipping through the most relevant bits cause I now think that the story is longer than I had in mind. I can go back and fill in some exposition later when I have time.
Still feasible to make the deadline. *blows out a big breath*
Bad writing day today. I added about 1200 words and ended up stripping all of them. They took me the wrong way, and every one was a fight with my mental voice to get it on the screen in the first place. Argh! I saved it though - I might be able to use it later.
Went back several pages, started again and took a different route. Words started moving so I know I'm on the right path, but it's now 2am and I need to hit the sack.
Net progress - 400 words. *cries*
