Polaris 21 - Toronto - July 7
Jul. 9th, 2007 04:46 pmConvention, Day 2
Saturday was absolutely packed with events (that I did not go to, for the most part *laughs*). There was a viewing room, where selected episodes of various shows, or favourite movies etc were shown. And there were discussion panels in seven different rooms, a different panel every hour. Topics ranged from costuming to writing to analysis of specific topics. (Such as BSG S3 arc, Supernatural and the Yellow Eyed Demon, and so on).
Most of the discussion was around Stargate and Star Trek, with a pretty good proportion of Battlestar Galactica as well. Only a couple of Supernatural ones, but 'In My Time of Dying' was one of the shows shown Sunday.
SO - what was *I* doing, if I wasn't enjoying the panels?
In general, I hit the cons for two things - the dealers room, and the guest speakers. The dealers room this time I was leaving for Sunday, so I decided to hit up the speakers instead.
I got there late enough that there were only two speakers left to go: Steve Bacic and Torri Higginson.
Steve Bacic

The first time that I noticed Steve Bacic was as Gaheris Rhade on Andromeda. A quick scan through his credits will point out some other memorable roles before that, as the SWAT fellow who lit himself on fire in X-Files' episode "Pusher", as well as the Manticore soldier who gets stripped and thrown on the bed in Max's dream in the Dark Angel episode "Heat". He's since done lots more, including an upcoming turn in the BSG: Razor.
I'd never seen Steve speak before. He has good stage presence and a great sense of humour, answering even the awkward questions with good grace. Unlike many of the folks I've seen before he seemed uncomfortable with just rambling, but other than that he gave a good talk with lots of humour and good cheer.
At the same time, Steve definitely feels very passionately about some topics, and when those were touched on he answered honestly, but with a mostly hidden edge. I can't find a way to describe it that doesn't come across wrongly - he's an excellent guest speaker. Perhaps the right word is ... tension? Some of the answers had a specific tension that showed that Steve felt strongly about the topic. I can see why he's so good at playing military and contained types, despite how well he does the goofier spoofy roles too. A versatile fellow!
Torri Higginson

Torri plays Dr. Weir on Stargate Atlantis. She is great in the role, a very contained, intense one.
In person, she is extremely personable. She was bubbling with energy and good cheer, and won over the crowd in a very short period of time. All of the questions were tasteful, and we did have the opportunity to learn more about her early career and time in England, as well as what kinds of roles she would like to do more of, her appreciation of the support Gateworld has shown her during and after the events of S3 finale, and how much fun it can be on the set. We also learned that Joe Flanagan's hair is always that messy, that David Hewlett ramps it DOWN to play McKay, and Jason Mamoa strips for laughs.
It sounds like a great place to work!
That was it for Saturday - I needed to head home for the final night of Symphony of Fire.
